RaccoonsAnimal/Insect-borne Diseases currently addressed by services at Erie County Department of Health include: Rabies, Lyme disease, and West Nile Virus.

  • The Rabies Control program, described in the Rabies Prevention Guide, is designed to prevent human rabies.
  • Rabies vaccination of pets and certain wildlife is encouraged through other agencies.
  • Animal bite prevention is promoted through education and the community coalition: Preventing Animal Attacks thorough Education (PAAWE).
  • The Department identifies tick species and provides the public with information on Lyme disease.
  • The Department conducts mosquito surveillance, collects mosquitoes, and provides mosquito control, when necessary, to control West Nile Virus.
  • Surveillance of human cases of other arboviruses is conducted.
