Animal/Insect-borne Diseases currently addressed by services at Erie County Department of Health include: Rabies, Lyme disease, and West Nile Virus.

The Rabies Control program, described in the Rabies Prevention Guide, is designed to prevent human rabies.

Rabies vaccination of pets and certain wildlife is encouraged through other agencies.

Animal bite prevention is promoted through education and the community coalition: Preventing Animal Attacks thorough Education (PAAWE).

The Department identifies tick species and provides the public with information on Lyme disease.

The Department conducts mosquito surveillance, collects mosquitoes, and provides mosquito control, when necessary, to control West Nile Virus.

Surveillance of human cases of other arboviruses is conducted.
